High Mountain Peaks in China

With its vast territory, China enjoys varied topography. Its relief runs into three ladders from the west to the east. The first lies in the Tibetan Plateau in the west. The second start from the north fringe of the Tibetan Plateau to Da Xing, An Ling, Taishang Shan, Wu Shan and the Yungui Plateau in the east. The lowest area to the west of the second ladder serves as the third.

The third ladder is mainly compose of plains and hills at an average attitude of less the 1000 meters while the second is made of higher hills, mountainous region and plateaus, with most peaks at around 1000-2000 meters above sea level and distributed in many famous mountainous scenic spots and tourist centers. As a region with the greatest number of high peak in the world, the first ladder consist chiefly of Tibetan plateau, which rise over 4000 above sea level. From its south to the north of such great mountains ranges as Himalayas, the Gandisi Shan range, the Tanulha Shan, the Bayankanla Shan, the Qilian Shan. Most of their peaks rise above snow line. Most of peaks of over 7000 m in height in the world cluster in Himalayas, the main peak of which, Qomolongma Feng (8848 m) stride Sino Nepal border. In the circumference of dozen of km around it, the highest peak in he world boasts the greatest high mountain peaks. Qogir Fang (8611 m) the main peak of Kalakulun Shan range (K2 Feng) on the northwest tip of Tibetan Plateau is the second highest peak in the world.

In addition to Tibetan Plateau, many high peaks stand above snow line in the Tibetan Range of North China.

In the west China, most of the high peaks in the world are situated and the most active mountaineering activities take place. This part of China has been the center f mountain climbing for long time.
